IBM announces DB2 V9.7

The new release of IBM DB2 9.7 for Linux, UNIX, and Windows offers better performance, better maintenance and lower TCO, especially for large databases. It's more reliable, and most importantly, compatible with other database languages.

DB2 9.7 will support Oracle database applications and is compatible with Oracle PL/SQL statement. Customers can port applications originally developed for Oracle databases to run on DB2 9.7, thanks to the built-in PL/SQL native compiler of DB2 and a variety of other compatible features. Oracle developers will enjoy using their skills on DB2 9.7.

DB2 9.7 supports:

• Importing Oracle Database schemas
• Importing Oracle Database tables
• Moving Oracle Database applications to DB2
  
• Supporting Oracle Database's concurrency model

An improved DB2 Storage Optimisation Feature offers more compression, saving database space. And improved system performance saves time and money. DB2 Storage Optimisation Feature includes:

• Compression for indexes
• Automatic compression for temporary tables
• In Line LOBs compression
  
• Compression of XML data

New features in DB2 9.7 enable administrators to leverage new database design options for XML data including:

• Hash partitioning (database partitioning)
• Range partitioning (table partitioning)
• Mulit-dimensional clustering
  

The benefit of these features is to allow organisations to exploit parallel processing environments, simplify the addition or removal of time-sensitive data, and speed performance of many types of queries.
